Kisshousou_temple is the place where famous Japanese priest, Ennogyouja,
was born and main training seminary for Japanese mountain Buddhist. The
temple legend say that this festival, Sagichou, have been continued since
the time in 701 A.C. Tennou_Monmu prayed earnestly to disperse the plague
and villagers held the numerous fire torches in token of their gratitude
for him. However I suggest this is a kind of Tondoyaku, popular new year
ceremony in all over the Japan. Two big torches are very unique and nominated
as a intangible treasure of Nara prefecture.
I think photographing is very difficult because it is very crowded in the temple field. Usually the positioning from the front of big torches might be best, but high toll position with tripod over 2 meter is indispensable for avoiding the crowd. So that time I took the near position from the side, where not crowded, with a stepladder (full iris f2.8, 1/30 second) -all photos of Sagichou, Kisshousou temple - |
