Oni had been said "Gagoji" or "Gagoze"in old time in Japan. "Gagoji"means "Œ³‹»Ž›" and "Gagoze"does "Œ³‹»_", which are assumed to have originated from Gankou temple. In old Japanese biography, Nihonreiiki, the story of "Priest of Doujyou" was narrated, who is boned as a child of the god of thunder with energy power, exterminated Oni, bring land under the cultivation and at last became excellent priest at Gankou temple. I suggest that Tsuinae, a dramatic ceremony in Spring that Oni was exterminated, had effect on this literature, I think most flourished festival had been held at Gankou temple in those days as to make this temple the pronoun of Oni. We know a mask of Oni remain at Gankou temple now.

Howerver I consider it is another cause that Gankou temple had been declining in Heian Era and the wiched persons made bulding around here.
By the way, Bizoubon at Gankou temple is held on August 23-24. Lanterns are dedicated toward stone buddha image with the air of illusion. You wonder if you see "Gagoji" over the stone image with lantern.
