Rice planting festival of Hackman shrine at Noyori is very rare and precious because some authorities say it has no action by imitated cow and near to the farming action in Heian era. Especially "Daitou" with a mask of old man play a role of the master in this ceremony and repeatedly open his umbrella in chorus "The master say we hope the happiness continue fortunately." This strange action mean the ceremony to pray for rain.
Additionally "Shouto" with a mask of old lady play a role of "Daitou"'s wife and deliver the boiled rice to audiences with "Kenzui"on her shoulder. "Shoutome" played by men make dance in chorus of old folk.
Many big trees of cedar remain in the precincts of Hakusan shrine and I sometimes have a illusion I was in the middle ages. (All photos - Rice planting festival/ Hakusan shrine at Noyori)
