January 1, 2005 Photo at night

A happy new year
It is so long to write this corner. Last year I choiced a best shot from 12 peaces of a corner "Self Praise"in 2003. This year I should continue to do that same as last year. I recommend you a following photo as a best shot during 12 pieces of corner "Self Praise" in 2005.
Onion, Yakushi_temple
Apr. 5 2003
It was introduced on April, 2004. An oni, a kind of Japanese spiritual evil, started to run at that moment on the background of "Stupa" built 1300 years before. This photo include several ideas for photos at night.

Firstly I did not use strobo despite of night. I could insert the background at the front of the object. But it was hard because the use of tripod was prohibited at that place. The choice of a lens 50mm with f1.4 of full iris made it possible to take it without strobo holding in my hand. The measuring in advance showed me the best setting was 1/30 second and f1.4 of full iris with ISO400.

Secondly I used negative film.
Some people hate using negative film as false color because it reverse the image toward the real color. However in the case of night photo, the kind of lighting made influence on photos heavily. If you use reversal film without strobo, you can not get the color as you look because it is adjusted for daylight. Negative film would rather accept slight influence from the light.

For a still life, it is one idea to apply tungsten film, but it is not available for the moving objects because the sensibility is ISO64. On the other hand, the ordinary sensibility of negative film is ISO400. It is not failure that the use of negative film is advantageous. Especially the professional use negative film of Fuji is very beautiful and amazing.

For example, I introduce two photos as follows. which were taken holding in my hands without strobo at night.

It is clear at a glance. Which do you apply?
I try to add the comparison between negative film without strobo and reversal film with strobo.

To tell the truth, a photo by reversal film with strobe was not good for the color tone because the light was irradiated directly. When you use strobo, there are many techniques which can adjust the tone and strengths of the light. In general, the use of a defuser or the bounce technique seem to be useful, but sometimes it is difficult to apply them in accordance with the situation. I wonder if it is clear that the use of negative film win at night.

However some effective utilities of reversal film at night exist, too. Reversal film have a character that it emphasis the red color. I guess the use of reversal film is best if you aim taking a picture of fire at night. I introduce one photo to you.

At last, I want to refer the digital camera.
Digital camera has various available abilities, white balance, color adjustment, sensibility selection system and etc. It is clear that digital camera is better than analog's for technology. But sometimes convenience do not always create good things.
I know the choice of film is the matter rather than techniques. Usually I hold 4 type film when I take a photos; Reversal films of ISO100 for landscape and for snap, of ISO400 and Negative films of ISO400. Because I can select a best film after I look the object in real. If I should use digital camera, can I take care of the objects as good as analog camera?
I will use digital camera sooner or later. But now I can not have confidence to use it well.

At the new year, sorry to explain only techniques for photo. However it was main theme which I had pursue for several years.
I am glad to make your acquaintance very well.
